Jarren Benton Interview

Jarren Benton is an emcee from Decatur, GA. Jarren began rapping at a young age and started performing at showcases around Atlanta. His musical influences came from Wu-Tang, Redman, Eminem, and Chino XL, at a time when the south had a much different sound. In 2009, Jarren released Jarren Benton: The Mixtape, produced entirely by The Beatgods. In 2011, he released a collaboration mixtape, Huffing Glue With Hasslehoff, with producer SMKA. The single “Skitzo” saw over 1.3 million views on YouTube, gaining the attention from Hopsin. Hopsin passed the word onto Funk Volume’s CEO in 2012 and months later, Jarren was signed. Jarren’s first project on Funk Volume, Freebasing With Kevin Bacon, was released the same year and featured Dizzy Wright, 2 Chainz, Rittz, Freeway, Gangsta Boo, Jon Connor, and more. In 2013, Jarren released his debut studio album, My Grandma’s Basement, featuring Hopsin, R.A. The Rugged Man, Vinnie Paz, Dizzy Wright, and SwizZz. Jarren earned a spot on the 2014 XXL Freshman Class and toured in 2014 with Tech N9ne, Freddie Gibbs, and Krizz Kaliko.
