Tajai of Hieroglyphics | Interview
Tajai is an emcee and producer from Oakland, CA. He is a founding member the underground hip hop group group Souls of Mischief, and the larger collective known as Hieroglyphics. In elementary school, Tajai met A-Plus, and years later joined with Phesto and Opio to release the Souls Of Mischief 1993 debut album, 93 Til Infinity, on Jive Records. It was later named by The Source Magazine as one of the Top 100 Rap Albums. In 1995, they released the sophomore album, No Man’s Land, and were dropped from Jive that same year. The group joined Del The Funky Homosapien, Casual, Domino, Pep Love, and DJ Toure to form the Hieroglyphics crew. In 1997, Tajai graduated with a degree in Anthropology from Stanford University. In 1999, the group SupremeEx was formed with Tajai and StinkE to release the album Nuntype and an enhanced CD called Projecto: 2501. The group first two studio albums were 3rd Eye Vision (1998) and Full Circle (2003), released to critical acclaim. The collective has also released five compilation albums, including their upcoming July 2013 release, The Kitchen.
