Schoolly D | Interview

Schoolly D is an emcee from Philadelphia, PA, and hip hop’s first gangsta rapper. Influenced in 1979 by the Sugar Hill Gang, Grandmaster Flash, and the Funky 4+1, Schoolly D teamed up with DJ Code Money in the mid-1980s to record music that reflected urban realism, violence, and sexual bravado. Schoolly D has contributed music to many Abel Ferrara films, including Saturday Night, King Of New York, The Blackout, ‘R Xmas, and Order Of The Quest. Schoolly also recorded music and narration for the animated series Aqua Teen Hunger Force on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. He also created the song “Sharkian Nights” for the animated series 12 Oz. Mouse.
