Buckshot (Black Moon) | Interview

Buckshot is an emcee from Brooklyn, NY and co-CEO of Duck Down Music. He was rhyming in cyphers while being exposed to hip hop at a young age. In high school, he befriended 5 ft, DJ Evil Dee, and Mr. Walt, who later became a production team, Da Beatminerz. In 1992, Buckshot, 5 ft, and DJ Evil Dee formed the hip hop group, Black Moon. Their first single was “Who Got Da Props?” in 1993, which led to a record deal with Nervous Records. The album, Enta Da Stage, was released with features from Havoc (Mobb Deep), and Smif-N-Wessun. In 1994, Buckshot left Nervous Records and formed Duck Down Management with friend Dru Ha. They signed Smif-N-Wessun and released the debut album, Dah Shinin’. Soon after, they signed Heltah Skeltah and O.G.C. In the summer, Buckshot collaborated with Masta Ace and Special Ed under the name Crooklyn Dodgers, for the soundtrack to Spike Lee’s film, Crooklyn. In 1996, Smif-N-Wessun and Buckshot began working on an unreleased album with 2Pac, who gave Buckshot the nickname The BDI Thug. In 1997, Buckshot, Smif-N-Wessun, Heltah Skeltah, and O.G.C. formed the hip hop super group known as Boot Camp Clik, relasing their debut, For The People. In 1999, Black Moon released their second album, War Zone, with features from Q-Tip, Busta Rhymes, M.O.P., and Heather B. Buckshot’s solo album was released later that year, The BDI Thug. In 2002, Boot Camp Clik released their second album, The Chosen Few, becoming one of Duck Down’s most successful releases. In 2004, Black Moon released the album, Total Eclipse. Buckshot and 9th Wonder collaborated in 1995 and released the album, Chemistry. Boot Camp Clik released The Last Stand in 2006 with production from Pete Rock, Da Beatminerz, 9th Wonder, Large Professor, Marco Polo, !llmind, and more. Black Moon released Alter The Chemistry, which added 70s-influenced rhythms and samples to Buckshot and 9th Wonder’s album, Chemistry. In 2009, Buckshot collaborated with KRS-One and released the album Survival Skills. In 2012, Buckshot released his third album with 9th Wonder, The Solution.
